Protecting the cultural heritage against particular hazards – climate, environment, pandemic and fire risks. Best practices

The Polish Committee of the Blue Shield was the initiator and co-organizer of the Scientific International Conference entitled “Protecting the cultural heritage against particular hazards – climate, environment, pandemic and fire risks. Best practices”. The conference was held in Krakow, Poland, on November 25-26 in a hybrid system.

The honorary patronage over the conference was taken by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Chief Commander of the State Fire Service – Chief of National Civil Defense, Chief Director of State Archives, Voivode of the Malopolska Region, Małopolska Provincial Conservator of Monuments, President of the Polish Committee of the Blue Shield.

The International Scientific Conference on the protection of cultural heritage is a cyclical event, held every two years. It is addressed to the owners and managers of historic buildings, people involved in the protection of monuments, representatives of rescue and security services, individuals interested in the safety of people and property, the use of modern technology in securing monuments, and representatives of government and local government institutions dealing with this subject.

During the conference, topics related to the broadly understood protection of monuments and cultural heritage were discussed. Participants could see, among others with new forms and methods of protecting museum, library and archival collections. They also learned how to apply modern institutional solutions, projects and international programs in practice. The conference was also an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices of cultural and national heritage institutions related to the pandemic threat.

The main introductory lecture entitled „The protection of cultural property in armed conflict and following disasters, the work of the Blue Shield” was given by Professor Peter G Stone, the President, the Blue Shield.

Session 3, entitled “Pandemic threats – new challenges for the protection of cultural heritage: experience of museums, libraries, archival institutions, good practices, directions of protective activities” was moderated by Members of the Polish Commeetee of the Blue Shield: Krzysztof Salacinski, President Blue Shield Poland and Lidia Klupsz, Blue Shield Board Member.

The speeches during the conference were simultaneously translated into English.
