On 2 July 2024, Blue Shield Austria, Blue Shield Germany, and partners had the privilege of hosting the 70th Anniversary Event of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict at the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU in Brussels.
The event titled “Milestones & Way to Go” brought together experts from the European Union, the Defense Sector, and Non-Governmental Organisations, including Blue Shield International, to discuss how we can collectively strengthen the protection of cultural property during armed conflicts and disasters.
Through interdisciplinary dialogue, they have developed Seven Recommendations focused on integrating the 1954 Hague Convention and its Protocols into EU policies to:
- Strengthen the EU’s global commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage.
- Align cultural property protection efforts with EU policies to promote resilience.
- Protect critical infrastructure essential for preserving cultural heritage.
Explore these proposals: they welcome any opportunity to collaborate, discuss, or provide further input.
The event was organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kulturgutschutz e.V. (German Society for Cultural Property Protection e.V. SGKGS – SSPBC, Blue Shield Austria Blue Shield Germany and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
