On October 2nd, 2024, at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Rome, the first National General Assembly of Blue Shield Italy was held, convened by the four founding associations ICOMOS ITALIA, ICOM ITALIA, ANAI, and AIB. After presenting the Blue Shield’s role and mission nationally and internationally, the members of the Executive Board and the President were elected.
The Executive Board comprises Alberto Garlandini (President), Daniele Spizzichino, Paolo Salonia, Bruna la Sorda, Laura Ballestra, Marika Mercalli, Michele Jasinski, and Lorenzo Appolonia.
At its inception, Blue Shield Italy had sixty institutional and individual members. Among them are representatives of associations and institutes active in cultural heritage protection and risk management, emergency response, post-disaster reconstruction, and armed conflict scenarios.
The Blue Shield is an international, independent, impartial, and neutral movement of non-governmental organisations protecting the world’s cultural heritage. It protects natural and cultural heritage during armed conflicts and disasters. It acts under the Hague Convention (1954), which recognised its role in the Second Protocol 1999.
The association’s future objectives include disseminating the culture of risk prevention for cultural heritage, coordinating initiatives and developing partnerships with the Red Cross and the Armed Forces, and developing training and capacity-building initiatives.
