On 31 January 2019 INCBS (Irish National Committee of the Blue Shield) held a launch event to celebrate the entry into force of the 1954 Hague Convention and the Second Protocol, ratified by the Irish government in May 2018 (read our previous article, but please note the correction).

The event, organised in association with Dublin Port Company and the Heritage Council of Ireland, was marked by a free public screening of Tim Slade’s film The Destruction of Memory, courtesy of the Irish Film Institute, which is represented in the INCBS through Kasandra O’Connell.

This was the first screening of The Destruction of Memory in Ireland. The movie, based on the book with the same name by Robert Bevan, shows the destruction of cultural heritage through recent history, the effect it had on people, what legislation and policies were in place, and how dedicated individuals risked their lives to protect people’s heritage.

The event was introduced by the founding and current chairmen of INCBS, Dr Michael Ryan and Lar Joye, and some 65 guests were in attendance.
