Blue Shield Poland organises “War and the protection of cultural heritage”

As part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention, Blue Shield Poland co-organized the conference “War and the protection of cultural heritage”, on April 19, 2024 at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The event ws organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in cooperation with the Ministry of National Defense, the General Directorate of State Archives, the State Archives in Warsaw, the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw, the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the Association of Monument Conservators.

The conference was part of the celebration of the International Day for the Protection of Monuments and the 70th anniversary of the Convention of 14 May 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the 25th anniversary of the Second Protocol to the Convention of 26 March 1999.

During the conference, presentations were given in three panels: “Determinants of the protection of cultural heritage in the light of historical experiences and contemporary challenges”, “Legal aspects of the protection of cultural heritage”, “Military aspects of the protection of cultural heritage in the event of armed conflict”.

Krzysztof Sałaciński, President of the Polish Blue Shield Committee, presented 10 theses at the conference  regarding the security of cultural heritage in the event of threats in the new conditions of national security of the Republic of Poland.

The event was accompanied by the exhibition “Warsaw Stronger than War”, organized by the State Archives in Warsaw. The exhibition presented various materials – photos, sketches, plans, descriptions and other documents – related to the reconstruction of the capital after World War II.
