70 Years of the Hague Convention event success

Blue Shield Austria and Blue Shield Germany, together with the German Society for Cultural Property Protection e.V., the Swiss Society for Cultural Property Protection & the Fraunhofer Society, hosted a 70th anniversary event of the ‘1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict’ on 2 July 2024 at the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU in Brussels, which the BSI Secretariat was delighted to attend.

The event looked at the Convention’s ‘Milestones & Way to go’, offering insights from various experts of respective institutions and fields including the European Union, the Defense sector as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Through collaborative dialogue, the event explored interdisciplinary strategies and initiatives for further enhancing the protection of cultural property in armed conflicts and catastrophes, and will make a series of recommendations for better protecting cultural property and implementing the 1954 Hague Convention

This event was held under the patronage of the Austrian Embassy to Belgium, supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum.

On the Occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict Join us for an evening highlighting the impact of the Convention, addressing current challenges and reflecting the role of the EU! For the past 70 years, the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict has been instrumental in safeguarding historical sites and artworks from destruction, theft, and illegal appropriation. This occasion not only marks the milestone anniversary of the treaty established in 1954, but also aims to reflect on its achievements and challenges, particularly amidst ongoing conflicts such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East. This event will look at the Convention‘s “Milestones & Way to go” and will offer insights from various experts of respective institutions and fields including the European Union, the defense sector as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs). By fostering collaborative dialogue, we aim to explore interdisciplinary strategies and initiatives for further enhancing the protection of cultural property in armed conflicts and catastrophes.
